Our Values

  • Transitional Justice

The THEME of the Henry Louis Center is TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE.  Transitional justice is concerned with fairness after an injustice.  After Dr. Unoke had been a child soldier, and after he saw his 3 brothers die from the war, and after he knew that girls from his village were kidnapped from classrooms in other parts of the country and never returned, how will he find justice?  What is this transitional justice?  He will find ways to change the wrongs---to replace the injustices with just and restorative and reconciling behavior.  He will remedy.  He will examine future possibilities.  He will celebrate when on September 5, 2016, 5 students come to the new seventh grade classroom on the first day, and a week later 35 students come and a month later 110 students are attending.  A new day has come!!!   Parents are celebrating!!!!  The community is celebrating!!!!!  Next year there will be a seventh grade and eighth grade, and the following year, a seventh, eighth grade, and a high school.  The elders of the community have set aside the land, and an access road to begin building a college is under construction.  EDUCATION IS TRANSFORMATIONAL!!!!  EDUCATION IS POWER!!!!!!

  • Global Peace

Global Peace is the antithesis of ignorance.  From ignorance comes suspicion, fear, hatred, and, finally, violence.  The individual who is educated in cultural diversity and who understands extreme poverty becomes empathetic and service-minded.  Inclusivity enriches the soul and leads to service for those less fortunate.  An open mind and heart yearns for global peace.

  • Leadership

Education is preparation for leadership.  The leader has knowledge and has a vision for needed change. A leader with positive results has first been empathetic and sometimes tirelessly passionate for a cause.  Obvious examples are The President of the Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi.  Our students can easily become impassioned leaders, given a cause, so they must be prepared. "We don't need a title to lead.  We just need to care.  People would rather follow a leader with a heart than a leader with a title."  Craig Greschel

  • Educational Excellence

Striving for Excellence leads us to stand above mediocrity.  Some people work to fulfill the requirements while others work for an ideal of perfection.  Even though no one is perfect, the striving for perfection results in a superior product.  That striving causes us to be competitive with ourselves.  We seek methods of study that allow us to learn more, read more, write more than is required.  Excellence is an attitude that can pull us along to be more than we ever thought we could be.

Who Is Henry Louis?

Dr. Henry M. Louis, Jr. taught and served as the Chair of the Social Sciences and then as the Dean of the Social and Behavioral Sciences at Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) from 1967---2005. “He was an historian who loved to teach and a lifelong student of diverse cultures. Henry was a raving global extrovert and scholar who led his colleagues and friends on numerous trips around the world. This legendary educator has bequeathed an unmatched multicultural and mini-United Nations faculty to KCKCC, says Dr. Unoke Executive Director and founder of HLC.

“Henry’s keen eye for shared values, and his deep respect for all people, shaped his relationships on the KCKCC campus and around the globe." His enthusiasm for life and love of learning motivated students and his colleagues to discover their own strengths.

Professor Unoke adds, "Dr. Henry Louis was a man of action and a consensus builder. He believed in KCKCC’s core mission of Making Life Better. His initiatives helped to make our college a special place where students and teachers could do their best. Professor Louis believed in multiculturalism, global friendship, citizen diplomacy, and advocated for truth, freedom, and justice.”
