Sixty-one million children globally are not enrolled in school, because there are no schools where they live.
Thirty-nine percent (39%) of the impoverished have never been in a school.
Millions of impoverished are living on fifty cents to $1.00 per day.
The original expectation (2016) was to start a high school for the children of Ntsokara; in 2022 ten villages are sending their children to NHS.
Enrollment steadily increases from the first 5 students on the first day, September 5, 2016 with a projected expectation of 500 by next fall.
NHS started with 1 building of classrooms. Students now use 5 buildings and are overcrowded.
Ntsokara High School is ranked as one of the top two schools in the state of Ebonyi within its first 5 years
We started by asking the families to provide a desk and chair for their child; not everyone has complied, so many students are without a desk. Some sit holding a bag on their lap with the lesson handouts.
A van driven by the principal has been added to pick up students who were walking 6-10 miles from and to home.
West African Examination Council Accrediting Board required a separate building for yearly testing; Mt. Zion Church of Kansas City, Kansas donated funds and Zion Hall is the result. WAEC is using Zion Hall as the Regional Testing Center.
The labs for computers, general science, chemistry, physics and animal husbandry all received a rating of excellent from the WAEC Accrediting Board.
The Jimmy Carter Library, also, has a rating of excellent from WAEC. The library is named after the American President who visited Nigeria in 1982 and was dismayed by people sick and dying from the drinking water. The two water wells in Ntsokara were provided by President Carter, and the library bears his name as a reminder to the youth of his impact on their lives.
The Henry Louis Center has cleared the land and built a bridge for access to the college land site.
A building is 70 % completed with more than 20 classrooms to be used for a two-year college.
A water well has been added to the college building site after a surprise donation on August 24, 2022.
The most urgent need at present is funding to complete the college building project. Students who graduated from NHS in May need job training.
Desks are needed for the classrooms.
Children and some teachers are without shoes.
Many children are hungry. We would like to provide at least one meal per month.
If enrollment continues to expand as we expect it will, another building with additional classrooms will be necessary.
Funding to complete the college building is needed.
Teachers' salaries must increase if we are to remain competitive in the job market. These children need every advantage available.
The THEME of the Henry Louis Center is TRANSITIONAL JUSTICE. Transitional justice is concerned with fairness after an injustice. After Dr. Unoke had been a child soldier, and after he saw his 3 brothers die from the war, and after he knew that girls from his village were kidnapped from classrooms in other parts of the country and never returned, how will he find justice? What is this transitional justice? He will find ways to change the wrongs---to replace the injustices with just and restorative and reconciling behavior. He will remedy. He will examine future possibilities. He will celebrate when on September 5, 2016, 5 students come to the new seventh grade classroom on the first day, and a week later 35 students come and a month later 110 students are attending. A new day has come!!! Parents are celebrating!!!! The community is celebrating!!!!! Next year there will be a seventh grade and eighth grade, and the following year, a seventh, eighth grade, and a high school. The Elders of the community have set aside the land, and an access road to begin building a college is under construction. EDUCATION IS TRANSFORMATIONAL!!!! EDUCATION IS POWER!!!!!!
Global Peace is the antithesis of ignorance. From ignorance comes suspicion, fear, hatred, and, finally, violence. The individual who is educated in cultural diversity and who understands extreme poverty becomes empathetic and service-minded. Inclusivity enriches the soul and leads to service for those less fortunate. An open mind and heart yearns for global peace.
Education is preparation for leadership. The leader has knowledge and has a vision for needed change. A leader with positive results has first been empathetic and sometimes tirelessly passionate for a cause. Obvious examples are Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine and Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Gandhi. Our students can easily become impassioned leaders given a cause, so they must be prepared. "We don't need a title to lead. We just need to care. People would rather follow a leader with a heart than a leader with a title." Craig Greschel
Striving for Excellence leads us to stand above mediocrity. Some people work to fulfill the requirements while others work for an ideal of perfection. Even though no one is perfect, the striving for perfection results in a superior product. That striving causes us to be competitive with ourselves. We seek methods of study that allow us to learn more, read more, write more than is required. Excellence is an attitude that can pull us along to be more than we ever thought we could be.
